ABOUT OUR MUSIC

The choir of the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin is a professional ensemble that sings music for the liturgy.  At each Solemn Mass, the traditional chants are sung to plainsong in the original Latin. The choir, in its role as a servant of the liturgical assembly, sings a setting of the Mass ordinary and an anthem or motet during Communion. The choir’s repertoire of Masses and motets stretches from the Middle Ages to works by living composers. This music is heard in a liturgical context and in a spectacular acoustic, which is not unlike many of the great churches of Europe for which much of this music was written.  The liturgical life at Saint Mary’s also provides substantial opportunities for congregational singing of hymns, psalms and canticles, in addition to other great music of the Western tradition.
