Rebecca and Friends
Mission Church
A Poem reflecting on a Mission to Honduras
The Mission Church
San Juan Evangelista, Villanueva, Honduras

Rattling up the dusty hill
in the old school bus, we're swayed
and bumped from our seats.  Our hearts
already in our throats, leap
at the sight of you, smiling from the faces
of your children, shining, even through
dirty windows.  The door folds open
to them rushing toward us: la oracion
they shout, la oracion, and pull us forward
by the arms, waist, hands, so we can
come into your house,
press flat our fingers and palms, pointed
to your name, higher above, yet
right here, the name, like love,
holding us, not precariously, but certain,
over the teetering, tumbling down
world below, where we've joined
each other, all together,
together.
